Berkeley Square Society Band

The jazz age of the roaring 20s and Charleston rhythms, through the 1930s lavish stage and screen musicals to the time of the swing bands, was a golden era of 20th century popular songwriting.

Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, composer Jerome Kern and his lyricists P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II and Dorothy Fields, the celebrated teams of George & Ira Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart: these names evoke a world of unmatched musical sophistication and verbal finesse.

They and their contemporaries produced a cornucopia of unforgettable songs.

Popularised by Hollywood and the burgeoning record industry, broadcast by radio crooners and taken up worldwide in clubs, hotels and restaurants by bandleaders such as Duke Ellington, the Dorseys, Ray Noble and Glenn Miller, this seemingly endless stream of melody has furnished musicians with a treasure trove of timeless classics ever since.

With some genuine contemporary commercial arrangements and the many lovingly crafted new ones that give the band its unique but authentic sound, the BSSB does full justice to the elegancent and verve of this halcyon period of popular music. Repertoire List
